Excavations carried out in the village of Valbonne indicate that prehistoric human tribes lived here. The items and paraphernalia found show evidence of agricultural development in the 1st century A.D. The founder of Valbonne was Bishop Augustin de Grimaldi of Grasse in 1519. It was built next to the Abbey of Chalaisienne.
Under the Romans, Valbonne was one of the three villages supplying food to Antibes. The peculiarities of the architecture are the houses on the mound, which are its boundaries, and the presence of entrances on all 4 sides. The 17th century square, the 19th century town hall and the fountain, built in 1950, also attract attention. Valbonne gained further fame with the founding in 1969 of the Centre for the Development of Scientific Technology Sophia Antipolis.
