In 2021, Parc Phoenix in Nice hosted Wild Immersion, an unusual series of immersive films allowing visitors to take a virtual journey through natural environments around the world.
Using 360° filming and virtual reality headsets, visitors could observe wild animals from remarkably close perspectives and experience the sensation of being present in their natural habitats.
A virtual encounter with wildlife
Wild Immersion develops audiovisual experiences focusing on wildlife and nature conservation. At Parc Phoenix, visitors used VR headsets to watch short immersive films lasting approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
The technology transported viewers into different natural environments and allowed them to observe animals almost as if they were standing beside them.
The programme changed throughout the season, featuring films devoted to underwater environments, primates, Central American wildlife and other ecosystems.
More than entertainment
The experience was designed as more than a visual attraction. One of its main objectives was to raise awareness of wildlife conservation and biodiversity.
Wild Immersion developed its activities around the idea of educating, connecting and protecting, combining virtual exploration with information about animals and the natural environment.
Particular attention was given to younger visitors. Interactive educational areas helped explain why certain species are threatened and how human activity can affect natural ecosystems.
Wild Immersion at Parc Phoenix
Parc Phoenix was a particularly appropriate setting for the project. One of Nice’s major nature and educational parks, it combines botanical gardens, themed areas and animal habitats.
Wildlife protection is also part of the park’s mission. Parc Phoenix takes in animals that have been abandoned, confiscated or recovered following illegal wildlife trafficking.
The educational approach of Wild Immersion therefore closely reflected the conservation work already carried out by the park.
The 2021 experience in Nice
Wild Immersion was presented at Parc Phoenix from June until late November 2021. Several different films were shown during the season, including Aqua, Terra, Tour du Monde, Grands Singes and Alba.
This rotating programme gave visitors the opportunity to return and discover different aspects of wildlife and natural ecosystems.
