Every February, Nice turns into one of the French Riviera’s largest festive stages as the famous Nice Carnival takes over the city centre.
The programme traditionally includes daytime and evening Corsi Carnavalesques, the celebrated Batailles de Fleurs, street performances, concerts and entertainment throughout central Nice.
Each year, the carnival attracts residents and visitors from across the French Riviera for several weeks of colourful parades and events.
Carnival floats and costumes
Preparations begin long before the opening of the festival. Artists, designers and technical teams spend several months creating the large-scale floats that become the centrepieces of the carnival parades.
Costumes are equally important. Performers, musicians and dance companies appear in elaborate outfits inspired by the annual carnival theme, giving each edition its own distinctive visual identity.
The King, the Queen and evening parades
The symbolic King and Queen remain central figures in the carnival tradition. They are joined by musicians, dancers, flag bearers and numerous performers during the processions.
Evening events are particularly spectacular, with illuminated floats, music and light displays transforming Place Masséna and the surrounding streets.
Bataille de Fleurs — the Battle of Flowers
One of the most recognisable events of the Nice Carnival is the Bataille de Fleurs, or Battle of Flowers.
Floats decorated with fresh flowers travel along the parade route while costumed performers throw flowers to spectators. The tradition has become one of the defining images of the carnival.
A festive atmosphere in central Nice
Throughout the carnival period, the city centre hosts concerts, performances and entertainment for both adults and children.
The main activity is traditionally concentrated around Place Masséna, Jardin Albert Ier and the surrounding streets. Before certain parades, visitors can also see the carnival floats in the city centre and take a closer look at their elaborate designs.
