Vence is a town of medieval charm and one of the destinations that tourists from all over the world love to discover. Its rich history dates back to antiquity. Inhabited by the Ligurians, an indigenous people of the Mediterranean region, it was conquered by the Romans, who established colonies here. In the Middle Ages, Vence was a small fortified village perched on a hill and regularly disputed by various local powers, notably the Counts of Provence and the Counts of Nice. During the Renaissance, Vence enjoyed a period of economic prosperity thanks to agriculture, notably olive growing and vineyards, as well as crafts. The cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built at this time.
Visitors enjoy strolling the streets of the old town to discover its authentic atmosphere, picturesque historic center with narrow streets, cobbled squares and well-preserved old buildings.
Vence is famous for its rich artistic heritage. Painter Henri Matisse settled here for 5 years and produced numerous works of art, including his masterpiece: the Rosary Chapel.
